Global Positioning Counseling (GPC

In many new cars there are amazing technological devices called satellite navigational systems. They are usually mounted on the dash or above in the roof of the automobile. They are linked up to a satellite that is constantly processing geographical information regarding the position, speed, direction, and destination of the vehicle. Using this device requires only the input of a destination and the computer and satellite will do the rest.
I submit that an understanding of counseling and psychological theories are the navigational system for the therapist. Without them, it is impossible to know where the client is on the road to meeting their goals, where a wrong turn might have been made, and when the destination has been reached. I further submit that the learned counseling techniques are the computer in the car and the theories are the satellite in the sky looking down with benevolence, preciseness and great care. The satellite knows its orbit and cannot vary from it. Likewise the psychological theories are constant.
Continuing with this metaphor, I quickly add that when I was first experimenting with a navigational system I was in the car and did, indeed make a wrong turn. I was surprised with the voice coming out of the dashboard. No one came running with a large object to punish me for taking a wrong turn. No one came up to the car to angrily inform me that my turn was somewhere in the past. In addition, no one stood in the front of the car giving definite and precise information about where the next turn is. The voice in the dash very simply said, "Recalibrating from present position." The satellite and the computer then began to have another conversation, a new map was produced and I turned around at the nearest opportunity.
That, I think is why counseling techniques and psychological theories are important to understand. They give a professional counselor the skill and ability to someday say to many clients that no one judges them; no one makes any assumptions about why they are where they are and certainly no one here can determine your direction. With that basic existential approach in mind, let us begin to recalibrate you from your present position.

Human beings experience pain. This pain can be psychological, emotional, physical, and spiritual. The variety of reactions to pain are interesting. Some individuals will react to pain by attempting to avoid it, mentally disallow it, pretend it doesn't exist. Others will self medicate, anesthetize themselves with various drugs, either legal or illegal. But, I submit to you dear reader, that the healthiest way to deal with pain is to experience it in its fullest dimension. You must come to the place where you can process through the pain and see it for what it is and what it means to your life. In fact, true neurosis is demonstrated by the many pathological ways people may try to avoid the reality of pain. We over eat, over spend, over shoppe, over sex, over travel, and over compensate for a myriad of existential issues we are attempting to avoid. To get healthy, you must work through this pain.
